Department of Journalism and Mass Communication:

 

The journey of the department was started in the year 2003 with a general course and in the next year, Honours course was introduced. This department offers a skill-based training and placement course in film and media industries. A good number of students have been working in print as well as audio�visual media. A number of alumni are working as professional camera man, editing section, assistant director in the film industry etc. Students are pursuing higher studies at different reputed educational institutions in every year. The department takes different motivational activities such as several special lectures, seminars workshops etc. at regular intervals. The purpose of journalism is not defined by technology, nor by journalists or the techniques do they employ. Rather, the principles and purpose of journalism is thus to provide citizens with the information they need to make the best possible decisions about their lives, their communities, their societies, and their governments.

Departmental Highlights:

 

UGC sponsored International Conference (2009) on Perspectives of the Press: From 19th Century to the Present had been jointly organized by Department of Journalism and Mass Communication and Department of History.

 

Project works on social issues, women and child issues, film, players, folk media, national and international affairs etc.

 

Well equipped laboratory with the following facilities:
i) AC Editing room, ii) Editing set-up iii) CCD Camera with related equipment, iv) HD still Camera, v) Television set vi) DVD Players vii) Day light viii) Boom or microphones ix) computer sets x) speakers xi) printers.

 

Regular extension lectures and student enrichment programmes by external experts like Sri Asoke Viswanathan,  Faculty, WBSU, SRFTI, Short Film Maker, Director, Prof. Pallab Mukhopadhyay, Assistant professor, WBSU,
Sri Soumya Chowdhury, Executive Officer, Jalsha Movies and others.

 

Students enthusiastically participate in various activities like publishing wall magazine, participating in exhibitions (making of newspapers; women empowerment in silver screen; history of typography, etc), attending national seminars, conference etc.

 

Students of the department are involved in every college event as reporter and professional photographer.

 

Awards won by department students: 3 awards for Best Performance in Mock Parliament and Quiz Contest by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt of W.B. in Jan, 2011. One selected in ZEE India's SAREGAMAPA competition (2015).
